SCOTT

The following weekend, Addi skips next to me as we walk up to meet Jax at the head of our favorite trail at Maple Falls. The woods are in their last gasp of fall color before winter hits, and I’d bet it’ll snow by Thanksgiving, given how cold it’s been lately.

“So you are Addison,” Jax says, shaking her hand. He has this great accent—I’m told it’s Cornish—even though he looks like a California surfer boy.

“I am.”

“And you like to hike.”

“I love it.”

He grins. “Scott here has asked me to teach you wilderness skills.”

“Both your daddy and I think it’s a good idea,” I tell her. I haven’t actually asked Luke, but I know he’d approve. He’s very much interested in the safety of his little girl, so the more we can teach her, the better.

But thinking about him makes my thoughts spin out into the stratosphere. So while Jax starts down the path, pointing out different kinds of plants, I’m back to thinking about what Luke and I have been doing.

What have we been doing?

Apart from “each other,” that is.

We’ve been sneaking quick-and-dirty blowjobs or handjobs, too nervous to linger in case Addi wakes up.

But I wish we could linger.

Not your soulmate. Luke is not your soulmate.

And we haven’t fucked yet.

Not that everyone does anal, and that’s okay, but I don’t think that’s what this is. It feels like Luke is holding back, and I don’t understand why. Is there something wrong with me?

We cross over a stream that has a little bridge, and Jax points down. “While the water looks pretty, sometimes it has bacteria in it, so never drink untreated water.”

“What’s bacteria?” Addi asks.

“Things that can make you really sick.”

Her mouth makes an O. “Okay.” And now she’s all ears as he explains basic outdoor safety to her.

Addison is all about woodlands and unicorns, but I want her to know how to keep from getting a blister, what to do if she can’t find the trail, not to touch poisonous plants, and so on.

While Jax does his spiel, I walk along, enjoying being outdoors and wishing I could spend time with Luke like this. We take the spur to the waterfall, so our hike is a little longer than usual.

When we stop at a large boulder to sit, drink from our water bottles, and catch our breath, I ask Addi, “We need to get your daddy out of the house, don’t you think?”

She nods at me. She’s so solemn it makes me want to laugh. Jax and I exchange amused glances.

“What do you think we should do?” I stage-whisper. It makes me feel like we’re in a conspiracy. Which, I suppose, we are.

“We should take him up in a hot-air balloon! Daddy likes to see things from high up. In New York, he lives in a tall building where he can see down on everything.”

I raise my eyebrows. I don’t know anything about Luke’s life when he’s not being a work-from-home single dad. I’ll have to ask him about it.
